Woot! I saw the listing for your reading in Portland this AM! For once I am free to attend something cool! I'm gonna bring my kid so could you please swear more than usual? (Seriously, I'll tuck her away in the appropriate section, like Graphic Novels or Fine Art Photography).

Chris Bowe is the John Brown of independent booksellers. I worked for him back in the day and didn't appreciate his dedication then so I will now go ahead and say he is the man! I once heard him tell a person in his store (I hesitate to say "customer" to go to hell for asking where Borders was.

Chris Rocks! Ed Lin Rules! I'll be there with bells on!

Chris at Longfellow Books in Portland, Maine, describes you and some Arkansan lit. major* (pardon my bigotry and paranoia) as writing honest books. Let me get the other name. I'm talking about the email announcement of your respective readings. "Greetings Dear Readers, re. Two of a Kind:
One is set in New York's Chinatown in the 1970's, the other in present-day Arkansas. One stars a cop who wants more out of life, the other two fledgling criminals who'd like a little less. What the two books do have in common is a revealing honesty that makes these characters truly memorable. And both authors are coming to the store this month for readings."
Chris is understatedly radical: it is memorable to hear honesty.
Is that a theme? What can art be if honesty is illegal? About it being illegal, I guess. What if that kind of art is also illegal? Then art has to be about that kind of art being illegal. Are we getting to where art operates today?

*"John Brandon's work has appeared in McSweeney's Quarterly Concern, The Believer, Mississippi Review, Subtropics, The Duck & Herring Warm Weather Field Guide, and Words & Images. He was raised on the Gulf Coast of Florida. During the writing of Arkansas, he worked at a lumber mill, a windshield warehouse, a Coca-cola distributor, and several small factories producing goods made of rubber and plastic. His favorite recreational activity is watching college football. Arkansas is his first book." Brandon is here the 31st of July. I guess he's not even from Arkansas.
